A Message to Our Shareholders: Assurant’s net earned premiums, fees and other income were $8.3 billion in 2013, an 8.2 percent increase from the previous year. Net operating income was $466.5 million, also a year-over-year improvement. Operating return on equity, excluding accumulated other comprehensive income (AOCI) was 10.6 percent. Our book value per diluted share, excluding AOCI(3), was up 10.4 percent – marking our third consecutive year of double-digit growth.

Assurant marked the 10-year anniversary of its initial public offering and trading on the New York Stock Exchange as AIZ on Feb. 5, 2014. The company’s IPO was the first billion-dollar initial public offering in 2004 at $1.76 billion and was the fourth largest that year. At that time, Fortis Insurance N.V., the U.S. subsidiary of the Dutch-Belgian Fortis group, held an IPO of some 80 million shares of Assurant stock.  The move was the first step in the total divestiture of Fortis' U.S. insurance operations.   Assurant’s storied history actually begins more than 120 years ago.

Several White Bear Lake High School students recently traded in their jeans and t-shirts for button up shirts and ties when they visited Assurant’s Woodbury, Minn. offices to meet their eMentors. The students were eager to meet face-to-face with the mentors who had provided them insights about the business world over email during the past eight weeks. For many, this also was the first time they visited an office setting. During the program, students send weekly emails posing questions that focus on themes such as education, technology and leadership.

To bring bright smiles to disadvantaged children in Mexico, Assurant Solutions Mexico recently assembled and donated 250 dental hygiene kits to World Vision’s dental care project. World Vision, an international relief organization, launched the Bright Smiles program to address the oral health issues of underprivileged children. Basic care packages filled with toothpaste, a toothbrush and dental floss for children through the elementary school system are distributed through the program.

The Red Cross’ annual holiday card campaign encourages the public to send inspirational and uplifting messages to military stationed in the United States and abroad. ATLANTA, Nov. 21, 2013 -- The Assurant Foundation and Assurant Specialty Property today announced a $50,000 donation to the American Red Cross, to help victims of Sunday’s tornadoes in the Midwest. The contribution from the Assurant Foundation, the charitable arm of specialty insurance provider Assurant, Inc., will go to the Red Cross’ disaster relief fund. The organization is providing shelter and other assistance for storm victims in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan and Ohio.
