In 2018, hundreds of Assurant employees in the U.S. and Canada will volunteer on dozens of local Habitat for Humanity projects. Our volunteers will do so with a spirit of giving back and will bring to life our partnership with Habitat for Humanity International, supported by a $550,000 grant from the Assurant Foundation.
In New York City, Assurant’s headquarters, Habitat for Humanity extends their giving beyond homes by “fixing-up” public spaces like community centers, playgrounds, parks, and schools with a program called A Brush with Kindness. The program engages more than 6,000 New Yorkers each year as volunteers.
“A habitat is not just a home, it is the environment that we live in and spend time in each day. In large cities like NYC, public spaces play an important role in fostering community and providing a mechanism for social engagement,” said Karen Haycox, CEO of Habitat for Humanity New York City. “We at Habitat NYC are so grateful to organizations like Assurant who partner with us to refresh these community spaces to provide a bright, safe and inviting atmosphere for New Yorkers today and for years to come.”
Recently, Assurant president and CEO Alan Colberg led a team of New York employees to help Habitat for Humanity New York City revitalize the Brownsville Houses Senior Center in Brooklyn – their 200thneighborhood space.
“Giving back to the communities where we live and work is an important commitment for Assurant,” said Colberg. “It was great to bring the Assurant Cares spirit to life as we planted gardens in the courtyard, painted murals and truly beautified this community center for the local seniors and their families.”
