Highlights of Volunteer Projects during 2008

In 2008, the Assurant Foundation continued its strong commitment to the United Way of New York City. Through Assurant’s annual United Way Week Campaign, employees raised nearly $131,000 in pledges and fundraising activities, in addition to the company match, a grand total of over $260,000. All proceeds were donated to the United Way to distribute among its key action areas.

In 2008, Assurant employees participated in a Secret Santa Letter program with Women In Need - an annual event gathering letters from disadvantaged children in New York City to fulfill their Christmas wishes. Employees also had the chance to wrap gifts for the holidays for underprivileged children in NYC.

Employees also raised funds for Share Our Strength’s Great American Bake Sale. By baking and selling delicious treats, participating in a multicultural dinner and selling smoothies, Assurant employees in New York raised over $945 to combat childhood hunger, $1,890 including the company match.

Employees also had the opportunity to volunteer with several local NYC organizations, including the Bowery Mission, serving meals to New Yorkers in need. Additionally, the New York office held various activities on site, including a suit drive benefiting Dress for Success, daffodil sales benefiting the American Cancer Society and a Thanksgiving food drive to benefit Bailey House.

The following is a breakout of our 2008 giving totals:

  • $33,115 in matching gifts and other office fundraisers
  • $100,000 in community grants
  • $130,949 United Way match for 2008
  • $27,250 in Corporate Contributions
