Allen R. Freedman Scholarship ProgramNamed in honor of Assurants first Chairman and CEO, the Allen R. Freedman Scholarship program provides $1,500 educational merit scholarships to children of Assurant employees in the U.S. who are pursuing a baccalaureate degree. Who Can Apply?To be eligible, the following conditions must be met: The applicant must be a dependent child, dependent stepchild or child of a domestic partner (as defined by Assurant) of an employee of Assurant or any of its subsidiary companies (collectively referred to hereafter as "the Company".) The applicants parent must be an employee of the Company working a regular schedule of at least 30 hours per week for a continuous period of at least two years as of December 1, 2002. Applications are only for those students who qualify this academic year. The applicant must be pursuing or planning to pursue a full-time course of studies leading to a baccalaureate degree at an accredited college or university. Graduate, trade, vocational, secondary and elementary schools are not included under the scholarship program. Relatives of the Foundations managers and Trustees are not eligible for this program. Selection ProceduresRecipients of the scholarships will be chosen by the Selection Committee, which is composed of qualified educators who are not affiliated with the Company or the Foundation. The Selection Committee considers each application received. In selecting grant recipients the Selection Committee will use the following criteria: Evidence of the applicants motivation, character, ability and performance as communicated from a personal interview with the Selection Committee. Prior academic performance. Performance on tests designed to measure scholastic abilities and aptitudes. Review of at least two recommendations from instructors. * The Selection Committee shall not consider the positions, services or duties of the parents of the applicants. The Selection Committee shall consider neither the financial need of the applicant nor the financial position of the parents of the applicant in making its selections. * A grant shall not be terminated because the parent of the recipient terminates employment with the Company subsequent to the awarding of the grant, regardless of the reasons for termination.
